Constituents to Tillis: We Demand You Support an Independent investigation into Russian Interference in the Election, and Oppose the Republican Health Care Bill

(Charlotte, NC) On Friday, community leaders, concerned citizens, and allies will rally outside of Sen. Thom Tillis’ office to demand the appointment of a Special Prosecutor to investigate Russian interference in the election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign, and to make clear their outrage over the House of Representative’s bill to repeal the Affordable Act, and expectation that Senator Tillis opposes it when the Senate takes up health care reform.

“Americans supported an independent investigation before Comey’s firing. Now people everywhere are demanding it,” said Pat McCoy, Executive Director of Action NC. “The American people deserve and respect the truth, and it is irresponsible and un-American at this point for Thom Tillis and any other Senator to oppose the appointment of a Special Prosecutor to ensure that politics and partisanship does not come before the truth and our national interest.

The rally participants will also make clear their feeling that the Republicans’ American Health Care Act (AHCA) is cruel and senseless. If enacted, the bill would take health care away from 24 million Americans, raise premiums by 20%, reinstate discrimination against those with pre-existing conditions, and unravel critical consumer protections vital to those who had no insurance coverage before the Affordable Care Act made it impossible for them to obtain it.

The AHCA also makes radical changes to Medicaid, a critical program for women and mothers and creates permanent cuts for seniors, children and people with disabilities and low-income women who have no other source of healthcare.

“Over one million people would lose health insurance in North Carolina if the ACA were repealed tomorrow,” said Jean Busby, Community Organizer for Action NC. “And drastic changes to Medicaid or Medicare would leave even more unprotected. There is no way Senator Tillis should even consider this bill. The Senate needs to start over.”
