Housing may be the most important aspect of people's lives. It impacts where people work, access healthcare, access to transportation, access to education, access to public resources, and access to food. As such, it is important for everyone to have access to quality affordable housing. With so many stresses in life, renting a quality affordable home or keeping your home from foreclosure should not be an added stress. Housing is an important issue for Action NC. We work to protect homeowners from foreclosure when there are other alternatives, we also work to ensure that everyone has access to quality affordable rental housing.

Fair Lending/Protecting Homeowners

Action NC is engaged in protecting its members and other from foreclosure. Through partnerships with the Home Defenders League, we are working to ensure that banks/lenders are held accountable for their actions during the housing bubble and that the settlements they agree to in order to avoid prosecution are providing real aid to struggling homeowners.

We are also working in collaboration with groups across the country to move Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac as well as the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) to make principal reduction a real solution for homeowners who are underwater on their mortgages as a way to ensure they can refinance into today's low rates and keep their homes.  We need to keep people in their homes not kick them out in order to not break up our communities!

Quality Affordable Rental Housing

Action NC realizes that millions of people in this country cannot afford to own a home. These individuals and families should have access to quality affordable rental housing. Our low wealth communities are filled with substandard housing and landlords who refuse to fix homes and apartments as they are more concerned with their profits than with the quality of living for their tenants. Action NC works to ensure that all tenants know their rights and have the ability to organize their communities to fight for better housing conditions. For more information on how this is being done in our cities visit our Neighborhood Concerns page.

****Action NC can help you organize your community as a way to take action to solve collective community issues. However, we cannot help with individual cases on a case by case basis as we are not a legal firm, rather a grassroots organizing and empowerment organization. We can point you to resources to assist you with your individual case.****

Tenant Rights

North Carolina has state laws that cover the Landlord-Tenant relationship.

The North Carolina Attorney General's office also has resources.

Here is a pamphlet you can print on your rights according to NC law

It is important as a Tenant to Know Your Rights!
